According to a knowledgeable source, Jorge Mateo, top prospect for the Yankees, verbalized his discontent with the fact that he wasn’t promoted to Double-A Trenton from Single-A Tampa. However, there have been signs that this may not be the reason behind the recently announced two-week suspension that was imposed on the infielder.
Due to the suspension, Mateo was not eligible to be a part of the Futures game in San Diego. The suspension was announced by the public relations department for the Yankees. Brian Cashman, the Yankees’ general manager, was not available for comments about the situation.
At 6 feet and 190 pounds, many inside and outside the organization think Mateo has a future as a big leaguer because of his blinding speed and live bat. The 21-year-old right-hander managed to impress the coaching staff for the big leagues during spring training.
