The Wimbledon tennis championships again turned out to be the best-attended UK sport event in the UK this year.
2016’s total is slightly less than last year’s 70.5 million, but the Rugby World Cup was hosted in the UK in 2015.
“Attendances of about 70 million say that 2016 was another successful year for sports in the UK,” said Deloitte’s Dan Jones.
Top 10 attended showpiece events turned out to be all multi-day affairs, like Wimbledon and the British Grand Prix.
With 14 days of play, the Grand Slam event, which was bested by Andy Murray, was once again the best-attended sporting event in the UK this year.
Concerning individual sports, as opposed to individual events, football was the biggest hitter in the attendance stakes, at 45.2 million.
