Yuzuru Hanyu, a Grand Prix champion, has finished second at Skate Canada, ceding the top spot to Patrick Chan.

The Olympics gold medalist conquered the free skate with 183.41 points and a 263.06 total, however, it wasn’t enough for Chan’s 266.95. In his program, Hanyu failed to land a quadruple loop, which he was hoping to introduce this season, but pulled off two of the other three quad jumps.

Finishing the tournament second, Hanyu still managed to rewrite world records in both short and free skates and is positive that he would be able to perform his free program without mistakes next time.

“My body held on,” said Yuzuru Hanyu. “I got over the mistake rather quickly. Managing to achieve what I’ve been targeting is huge.”

The 25-year-old Chan, meanwhile, managed to claim his second straight Skate Canada title.
