After Kevin Durant’s announcement about signing with the Golden State Warriors, many called him a front-runner interested only in the easiest possible path to an NBA championship.
Charles Barkley has a similar opinion. He said that Durant is “trying to cheat his way into a championship” by leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder to team up with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and the rest of the Warriors’ loaded roster.
It looks like signing with Golden State, which fell one win shy of a second consecutive NBA title, gave Durant some bad reputation. Still, it might be a bit too far to call it cheating.
After all, Barkley basically did the very same thing when he joined Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler on a stacked Houston Rockets team in 1996. The Rockets had won back-to-back championships in 1994 and 1995 but never made it past the West finals in Barkley’s three seasons with the team.
