At the end of the season for MLB, Brayan Pena, catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, plans to take on a new challenge. Pena recently announced he will join the Army Reserves.

It’s a noteworthy development for a variety of reasons.

It’s a huge break from the usual. Very few athletes have served in the U.S. Military. The few who have done so earlier in their careers and at a young age, like David Robinson of the NBA or Roger Staubach from the NFL.
